Reflection

  • According to our feedback we will improve on our pitch by planning on our storyboard in much more detail using a online storyboard maker such as storyboardthat.com
  • By thinking about our shots in more detail also, for example, by thinking about the chronological order in which our shots will go in the final music video so the shots do not appear random
  • Once we've improved our storyboard we will also re-do our animatic to improve the detail

Final ideas - Kizoa Video Maker

The thing in particular that we wanted to use was light effects including smoke bombs which will be filmed from different angles e.g mid shots and long shots.

PITCH: (Extra Blog) - Locations Screen Test (Shannon Binalay)

When visiting our locations, we took screen tests with our artist to look at shot types and what would be best when showing both our location and artist. I also attempted to get used to using manual focus when using the camera to see what compliments the artist better and avoid the automatic focus effect on the DSLR.

PITCH: Song Choice (Shannon)

For our song choice, we chose to do Karen Harding - Say Something. Our initial thoughts directed in doing a grime music video, although we thought realistically and looked at what we could provide in the small amount of time given to us for production. Being in an all female group of 4, it was clearly impossible to produce a grime music video without relying on others. We short listed British female artists, then narrowed our thoughts down to similar songs, then visualised what we could produce from those songs, which eventually cut down to this final song choice.

In terms of location, our video will be set more outdoors. We are going to film on a roof top, park, tunnel, etc. There will be less people in our music video. However, we want to keep some of the elements like the lights. We want to in cooperate the lights in the night time, as they shine brighter against the dark, this will all be outside though. Our artist is going to wear more simple clothes, with her brand image being red lipstick.

(34.) PITCH: Risk Assessment (Shannon Binalay & Martyna Przybycien)

Risk Assessment (Shannon and Martyna):

1. Roof Top - Weathering issues, if it may rain, ensuring that we do not injure ourselves is an essential to keeping safe on the roof. Staying away from the perimeters of the area would be the safest option. Keeping all equipment away from the perimeters, to ensure safety of pedestrians and avoiding damage of technology.

2. Filming at Night - Cautions include avoiding dangerous areas of London. All equipment must be secured within the participants of the group. Equipment must always be in sight of the group.

3. Sparkler and Smoke Bombs - Safety is essential when handling both the sparklers and smoke bombs. We must ensure that we handle both objects with care, keeping in mind that our safety is most important. Smoke bombs must be activated in an open space, where it will not affect any pedestrians. Sparklers must also be in supervision of the member over 18 in the group. The artist must be wearing gloves.

4. Fireworks Display - Both equipment and group members must be of a reasonable distance from the fireworks display.

5. Equipment Care - All members of the group must ensure that equipment is handled with care.

(23.) PITCH: Synergy (Shannon)

Synergy (Shannon):
A key visual element of an artist is essential in order to make them memorable and recognisable as an artist. We plan on using the visual element of red lips to identify our artist. The colour red will also be used in both our music video and ancillary products.
As mentioned, our music video will feature smoke bombs, which will also be in the colour red.

PITCH: Initial Idea (Shannon Binalay)

Initial Idea (Shannon):
Our ideas from our video were initially based around the original music video of the song. We noticed that the majority of the song was based in the darkness with vibrant lights, which we plan on using as a concept of inspiration.

As we are doing a house/pop type genre, we also looked into the visual style of the video and used Rhianna's We Found Love music video and we plan to use elements like smoke bombs and sparklers.
In terms of Goodwin's theory, our video has no direct relation with the song's meaning, so it would be defined as a music video of DISJUNCTURE.

PITCH: Post Production - Light Trails Trial (Martyna)

For our video, we wanted to have some shots of of light trails of cars. These were taken on a bridge in East London. Here. we learned what type of angle to shoot at to receive the best light from cars. We also realised the pole is in way.

PITCH: Design Ideas - Draft Digipak & Advert

As red lips is our choice of synergy element, I chose to use it as a main aspect of my digipak draft design. I used Adobe Photoshop to bring together these initial designs. I began with the design of the artist's name. Looking at a list of possible name, we chose HAZE, as it was short and memorable, but was also related to our main concept of lights; a hazy environment. I used a simple and thin font, then  held down ALT and <- button to adjust the kerning between each letter to make them overlap. I then rasterised the layer and removed the connecting shape in the letter A. I then duplicated the layer and added a gaussian blur effect to the other layer, making the letters glow up as if they were lights - which directly links to our music video. I kept the single name simple and spaced out evenly, then got a picture of lips and used the smudge tool. For the other design, I got a picture of a released smoke bomb (also related to our music video) and adjusted the saturation so it was more of a red tone, as it was initially blue. To create the outline of lips, I used a clip art image and used the magic wand tool to select the outline, and did the same process as I did for the artist font.

14- Reflection on progress

"10 posts at health check 1.  A bit behind where you should be - I'm not sure that this represents 4 hours of work each week....  You have some lovely and detailed posts (post 9 in particular), but generally your posts are lacking in the level of detail that you need at A2.  What I suggest you do is go onto the archive from last year (link on Advanced Portfolio blog) and look at blog 2 (Tahmina). She got full-marks for her blog and so this will give you some idea of what we expect.  If you ever feel like you are blogging using the same level of detail as last year AS then you aren't doing it in enough detail.
Targets for improvement:
Complete missing blogs by Friday 9th October
Go back to posts 4, 6 and 8 and expand on them in more detail.
Check your spelling (some unfortunately spelling errors in blog post 3 and 6).  You are losing marks for 'ability to communicate effectively' if you have spelling errors.
You must (can't stress this more) be setting aside 4 hours a week to work on this.  Any less and you are likely to be disappointed with the grade at the end of the year.  You have huge potential to get a high mark - don't let yourself down."

14. Reflection on Progress (Blogging Health Check 1)

For my first progress grade, my teacher told me I am working at a good level. My use of ICT is good, which I want to continue throughout my blogging as it helps keep my blog interesting. I have some blogs missing which I need to complete in order to maintain my grade.

14. Reflection on Progress

PROGRESS CHECK 1
13/20 marks -
"12 posts at health check 1. This isn't quite up to your usual standard Shannon, which is a bit of a shame and is reflected in your grade. There are some lovely posts (5 and 9 particularly) but generally your blogging is still at the same level as last year - A2 blogs must be in much more reflective detail. For example, blog 7 - it doesn't tell me that you understand the importance of audience research - it's very brief. Blog post 4 - also is very brief. Look back at the front of the blogging checklist - you'll see that blog post 4 and 7 are really important in terms of the mark scheme. Targets for improvement: 1. Finish off missing posts - 10, 13 and 14 are missing currently 2. Go back over other posts to ensure that you are producing them in detail. 3. Think about how you are using ICT: embedding a full video when you are referring to a section of slow motion or some jump cuts, or to just one location or costume, isn't the best use of ICT. you should be sectioning out bits of the video and using them instead (come to workshop if you don't know how to do this). You've got the potential to get an A but at the moment that's not where you are, which is a big shame. Come on...."

I believe that I have not worked as hard as I could have, due to my lack of varied ICT use and lack of detail, I believe that I deserve the mark I have been given so far. In order to improve my mark, I intend on going back to previous blogs, including blog 7, 4 and 8, and being reflective in terms of detail. I will also post up the missing blog posts. I intend on using different forms of ICT to present my blogs, including emaze, slideshare, etc.

Reflection on progress

Blogging health check 1
8/20 marks
"Minimal so far with only 4 posts. Dan to remark on Sunday"

So far I believe that I've been progressing quite well. At the beginning I struggled a bit with keeping up with the posts which reflected in my mark. However, since then I've picked up the pace and have completed over 5 more posts to a good standard with a range of different ICT. I also believe that the quality of my blog posts is extremely better than my blogging during the AS year.

Currently I would give my blog 12-14 marks out 20 for my different use of ICT and the level of detail in my blogging.

Targets for improvement:
  • Go back to previous blogs and add more detail
  • Complete missing posts
